My answer to What kind of climate does UK have?
Answer by Desmond Last:
The United Kingdom has a climate that is changing rapidly. When the lifespan of our Planet is measured against the changes that have taken place due to mankind’s pollution we can see that we have had a detrimental effect in a very short time.
The United Kingdom has the possibility of being one of the most affected countries by the accelerating rate of change of our climate in the Northern hemisphere. It is not prepared for it nor do the people seem to care or are aware of their vulnerability to extreme weather.
The U.K is in the centre of four weather systems and without a large land mass to provide a de-accelerator to rapid changes in pressure systems.
The Atlantic acts as an accelerator and Europe a form of jet stream as pressure systems combine and are positioned by the Atlantic over the U.K.
The UK has four major vulnerabilities. The first is that the furthest point from the coastline is no more than 100 miles. The second is that the East Coast has an accelerating effect to water that is pushed along its coastline until it reaches the Thames Basin and the other is movement of people in the event of mass flooding.
The fourth is the supply of fresh water, fuel and food should Europe not be able to be accessed due to bad weather.
The U.K has made no provision nor carried out any exercise with its people for the flooding which could result in the displacement of millions of its citizens. We do not have the landmass of Europe or the U.S within which to disperse climate change refugees.
The U.K will become more affected by toxic fog. The recent fog over the U.K was not handled well by Goverment. Respiratory Face masks should have been worn by the very young and the elderly. If necessary citizens should have been told to stay inside where toxicity exceeded ‘safe’ levels. The U.K Government did nothing.
Increasingly hot summers will see a water shortage in the U.K. Despite my own discussions on this subject Theresa May the Prime Minister and the U.K Media will not report or take notice of anything I say or write. I have been writing about climate change for nine years yet not one journalist has ever reported me.
The U.K needs an urgent debate about its optimum population size. This has nothing to do with wanting or not wanting immigration et al. It is to do with how much fresh water will be available to its citizens should a major drought or mass flooding take place.
Summary: The U.K has a rapidly changing climate. Hotter and drier in the summers with the possibility of flash flooding with drought and more prolonged flooding in winter with toxic fog and the consequent weather disruption.
