Answer by Desmond Last:

Yes it is possible. You must have a goal and a justification for that goal. The goal must be principled and allow you to stand aside of those who have no principle. The justification must be based on morality and justice.

Thus you are able to detach yourselves from those whose lives are selfish and have no purpose other than their own greed and satisfaction.

You must view them and their pettiness with a detachment that allows you to progress your own life without their small and insignificant lives interfering with yours.

However it will only succeed if your Goal is pure. In that it seeks no selfishness and provides no evil.

Is it possible to become detached to such a degree that nothing can affect my inner peace, and if so, how do I attain that state of mind?
