My answer to Are doors made to be opened or shut?
Answer by Desmond Last:
It will depend on who you are.
Let us assume that you are Prime Minister Theresa May. In May’s case doors are now shut. The door to expanding trade in Europe is now firmly closed as is the opportunity to reform the European Union into a system of democracy that allows sovereignty and economic community.
If you are Italy, Germany and Spain the door to take the U.K export trade is wide open.
If you are President Trump then the door to ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is wide open as you overnight become a physicist, biologist and chemist and reject the proven theories of hundreds of thousands of scientists who obtained the degrees you do not have.
If you are Kim Jung Un of North Korea the door to a world which will want to trade with you country is only kept shut by the lack of a phone call from President Trump.
Finally, if you are a frightened child in Yemen the door to a life that President Trumps’s grandchildren will enjoy is as firmly shut as your coffin coffin lid.
Doors to diplomacy, human rights and good government should remain open to new ways to improve our lives. Political intransigence and selfish political ambition will however keep them firmly closed.
Doors are made to be opened. How else can communicate.
