My answer to Do Australians really like skilled immigrants coming in and developing the country?

Answer by Desmond Last:

I emigrated to Australia as a skilled migrant in 1989 from the U.K.

I arrived on a Saturday and on Monday I walked all the way up Parramatta Road to the Ford Factory (in 1989 Australia still made cars) and dripping sweat onto the application form I applied for a job.

I also applied for a job with Alan Bond’s Press Fleet. I did not get either job. But the reception was both welcoming and friendly.

My third job application on Wednesday was successful. I had never worked on boats but my skill as a mechanic got me the job. I was given a dismantled boat engine and told ‘get it running and you have a job’.

It was January and I was still lily-white and began to turn lobster red as the boat was on a berth in the sun.

Years later I returned to the same Marina at Gladesville Bridge, Sydney to buy my own boat brokerage Sydney Boat Sales.

12 years later my very successful business was undermined by a nasty sick group of criminals who one day I will deal with as will many others. They have destroyed the lives of many people around the World.

I was never made unwelcome. If you can do the job and do not b..lls..t you will be fine.

In Australia b..lls,,t does not get a look-in but hardworking skills do.
