My answer to What is the first thing you notice about other people?
Answer by Desmond Last:
As I currently live in exile the United Kingdom I will state what I first notice about the people of the United Kingdom. ‘The lack of Pride in their Nation’.
I emigrated to Australia 25 years ago and came back 4 years ago. I am here looking after my mum who is 87 years of age. I keep buying Lotto tickets in the hope I can win enough money to leave ‘Bend over Britain’ my living Hell.
The most striking aspect and the most disappointing is that the people of the U.K are beaten. They are mere shadows of the once-proud people they used to be. Their acceptance of intellectually challenged Governments and Opposition has left them lost in a maze of indecision and Government fabrication as to the truth of their economic reality.
If I or the World have to listen to Theresa May stating once again, like the Parrot she has become, – ‘We are the fifth largest economy in the World and ‘the U.K is open for business I will probably jump into the English Channel and swim to France’.
The U.K is broke. Its increasing Public Sector borrowing requirement is £5200 per second. It cannot afford to pay for essential services. Public Funding is being cut like a scythe through those most in need.
The physical manifestation of their misery is in the way they walk. It is almost as if they are bowed down with the economic burden of successive Government who to put it in a nutshell ‘Do not have a clue’. But such is their obliging apathy that they accept all lies, all Parliamentary inadequacy and all the spin that their Establishment produce as verbal diarrhea.
They dress not to impress or with pride but with a dullness and mediocrity that in itself displays their lack of national unity through the disappointment of their achievements.
The U.K Press is muted and almost silent in its ability to act as a platform for reform and the House of Lords is a worldwide joke.
I stride and walk with Pride because I am English, born in London in what was once the greatest capital in the World. Now a haven for the rich and a sprawling ghetto for those just getting by and the increasing number of homeless.
I have have never let my country down. In my four years here I have never once missed an opportunity for suggestion with new ideas to improve the U.K . Every person who has been involved in discussing me with has agreed and welcomed my new ideas and then returned to their sullen apathy.
What else do I notice. The lack of laughter, of welcoming smiles and of buoyant steps. Everybody and I mean everybody complains but few do anything to remedy their almost soul destroying situation.
The young of the U.K have little participation in World Affairs. Aleppo might have been on the Moon such has been their lack of involvement in Protest at a Government that has let children die. They have no sense of Pride in their country and certainly no worth to the Global Community.
Their music once the tool of vocal freedom is now bland, boring and meaningless.
The U.K media have completely ignored me. They will not report me or my work. They too have become the Puppets of an Establishment that devours all discontent with spin and lies.
That is what I have noticed the most. ‘The lack of Pride’.
