My answer to Is Facebook wasting its time trying to connect Africa?
Answer by Desmond Last:
Africa needs Facebook. In fact the World needs Facebook. How else can we the people ensure we have a voice?
Our Governments will not listen to us.
The United Nations will not listen to us. They do not use the law to ensure the Governments obey Human Rights Laws.
The International Courts will not act for us. They do not issue arrest warrants for thsoe who allow the killing of civilians.
How else are we to make sure we let each other know how our and others human rights are being abused?
How else can we act as one in Protest or Boycott?
Day after day around the world Governments carry out human rights abuses. Right now in Aleppo in Syria children are being bombed, blinded killed. Facebook, Quora and Twitter ensure we know the truth and can discuss and act on it.
We can no longer rely on the likes of Obama or Putin to act as they are legally and morally required to do. Nor can we rely on the Western media to be critical of Government or to show the horrors being committed.
It is not ISIS or Al Qaeda that is raining bombs down from aircraft on civilians . It is Assad with the help of Russia. It is Obama who arms the rebels who also kill civilians.
Well done Facebook. Africa needs the connection. Facebook is not wasting its time.
Let is hope that Facebook does not allow Governments to censor those who speak for and demand human rights.
