Why do some homeless people prefer to stay on the streets instead of going to a charity-shelter?

My answer to Why do some homeless people prefer to stay on the streets instead of going to a charity-shelter?

Answer by Desmond Last:

I can tell you why I walked out of a Shelter and would rather sleep cold in the pouring rain then sleep in a Shelter.

When 3~ years ago I arrived back in London. I had no money. London is not a very friendly place when you are homeless. You are completely ignored. It is as if you are invisible. Even asking for a cigarette is mostly refused. Was I like that when I had money? No. But the majority of Londoners are like that.

After sleeping in Hyde Perk for one night, where I was woken up and told to move on, and having my wallet with my passport stolen, and on the Thames Embankment for another night, I decided to try a shelter.

I entered the crowded busy Shelter and was rudely questioned by a young man about 30 years younger than me. He ordered me. He did not speak to me. He made me feel about a foot tall. I was the result of his favour. All this in front of other people. I was a number on his Charities tally. I walked out.

That is why people will not use Shelters. Self-respect and Pride.

Why do some homeless people prefer to stay on the streets instead of going to a charity-shelter?
