My answer to In the field of development economics, what are the companies/charities/NGOs that do the most good for…
Answer by Desmond Last:
Any NGO, Charity or Company that gives Aid is destabilizing the local economy, promoting a dependency on aid and taking away individual and community empowerment.
Aid has become a business. A multi-billion dollar business which pays executive salaries at New York rates and operates from the expense skylines of New York and London.
Aid is used to support corrupt Governments who abuse the Human Rights of their citizens and removes representation from the People.
The only NGO’s et al who are ensuring that communities become economically sustainable and do the most good for developing countries, are those who lend money and ensure it is repaid.
We should be providing loans to communities not Governments.
Projects must be modeled and provide a profit.
Through the use of comparative advantage, we should be providing the market .
We should be auditing and paying all the bills. No actual money should be transferred to the community. There should be no ‘Umbrella Organizations’ with their huge fees and questionable accounts.
Once a community has repaid 50 per cent of the loan the repayments should be reduced by 50 percent and that amount used to fund a community in their region.
If Governments want to be involved it will only be on the condition they have complete transparency and are partners with their own funding.
To bring back democracy and peace to developing countries we must stop supporting corrupt or ineffective Governments with Aid.
