My answer to What job would take me around the globe? What would I need to do?
Answer by Desmond Last:
Standing on deck. The wind in your face. The taste of salt on your lips and miles of empty ocean. No cars, no traffic lights, no 8–5 routine. No masses of mankind on crowded trains nor a bumper to bumper drive home.
Good deckhands are hard to find. You do not have to have a degree or have armfuls of qualifications.
You will need a deck-hand certificate which is usually a five day course.

You will need experience but 12 months on your local boats should be sufficient
I was once a deckhand on the Sydney Showboat. I started with no experience and after 12 months I was the senior deckhand responsible for tying up a vessel that carried 300 passengers.
To be a deckhand on a large sailboat would need about 18 months experience less on a motor yacht.
Most harbours have charter boats and there is a steady demand for deckhands.
I have never seen or heard of any discrimination by gender or race.
It is a great job and one that will allow you to work anywhere in the world.
