My answer to What is your job and your salary? Are you satisfied with your current job?
Answer by Desmond Last:
My job is caring for my mum. Mum is 87 years old. The job is 7 days a week 24 hours a day 365 days a year. For that the U.K Government pays me £107 a week. I have no other income.
I look after my mum because I want to. I could go back to Australia where I have a home, but in the U.K the National Health Service does not have a system I can trust for looking after elderly people, and I would miss my mum.
When I become rich (I hope) I will get my mum a full-time nurse and a 2 week stay at the Dorchester in London. Mum has never had real luxury.
Mum was in Malta in the second world war and was bombed by the Germans.
My dad was in the R.A.F. in Malta. They met during the war.
Mum has been very sick and it has been made worse by a Hospital Service that does not have a system, which allows me as a carer, to know what it is Mum is likely to suufer from and what the warning signs are. I am self-taught.
When we go to the Doctor’s they allow 10 minutes for the appointment and constantly look at their watch.
Every Time we have had to call an ambulance for mum it is becasue the system has let mum down.,
When she does go to Hospital mum is discharged as soon as possible. Usually before she has recovered.
My dad paid taxes, I paid taxes. My mum paid taxes. Yet the Government makes sure we get inadequate support.
The U.K Government save a lot of money by using me instead of a care home which would cost about $600 a week.
Being old and with minimum income in the U.K is not a reward it is an effort to achieve a bearable lifestyle.
I am not complaining. After all I am not in Aleppo Syria looking after my mum. Just highlighting a system that needs change not just money.
