My answer to What will you do abou the human rights situation in North Korea?

Answer by Desmond Last:

You mean in comparison to the Human Rights situation in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia, Ethiopia, the Congo or the abuse I suffer from Western Governments – Obama and Cameron in particular? How about the right of a Marine to die for America but no right to a home or job? What about the right of the 3500 estimated so far to have drowned in the Mediterranean trying to escape war and absolute poverty. I am not trying to demean your question, it is a good question. But how can we criticize the Government of North Korea when so many human rights that are similar and far worse are happening around the world. In answer to your question – We cannot change the Human Right regime in North Korea until the ‘defensive attitude’ of North Korea is altered. That means engagement both Politically and economically. We must stop the hypocrisy of Western Governments who are constantly lecturing other countries on Human Rights whilst supporting those who abuse them. We in the West have allowed the application of the Law to make a mockery of the upholding of Human Rights. Human Rights are the application of the morality of Social Justice. They are not for a judge to decide if your rights to Privacy have been abused by an attic extension by your neighbor – that is for Planning Laws. In order to seek North Korea to improve its Human Rights Record we need to ensure we can take the moral high-ground. How can the West justify the cruel and inhumane treatment of a writer who for 8 years has protested to every government in the world that his human rights have been abused? What do you think Kim Jong Un says when his Human Rights Record is criticized. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International criticize

North Korea and Kim Jong Un laughs at them. He will say look at what you are all doing to Desmond Last. I have written to senior people at Amnesty International and never even received a reply. Human Rights Watch also ignore me and the Press never report me. In 8 years of writing to improve the world nobody has ever interviewed me. Why? Yet I am probably one of the few people in the World Kim Jong Un will want to discuss Human Rights with. So in summary we must help Kim Jong Un to bring North Korea into the World. But we must be sincere and want to help them not just use them as cannon fooder for our consumer production. They are a young and enthusiastic people with a Unity little seen in our World today. That is something that Kim Jong Un wants to preserve – after all his Grandfather marched and fought for it.
